With the help of her best friend Spotty, she discovers trying new things can lead to fun adventures and tasty inventions! The Alycat series encourages readers to celebrate the joy, innocence, and fearlessness of being a kid, while learning a valuable lesson in the end. Who doesn’t love to cuddle up for bedtime with an adorable family of kitties?? All three of my children were fascinated by the drawings, touched by the message, and had questions that pushed for meaningful connections between Alycat and disappointments that we’ve faced in our own house. Alycat is easily relatable to children and easily likable by parents. The fact that this book also includes an easy-to-follow recipe at the end was the icing on the cake! My kids and I had a blast trying out Alycat’s Popcorn Popsicles after reading the book and this has been their go-to book in the evenings.

Author Alysson Foti Bourque and illustrator Chiara Civati paired well with one another to create an enthusiastically fun story coupled with bright accompanying pictures that any student {and teacher alike} will be excited to discuss. Engaging illustrations draw students in, and meaningful messages allow teachers an opportunity to have teachable moments about life skills. Using the expression, “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” is an elementary teacher’s daily mantra. Alycat helps us to reinforce that message. Alycat also helps us have an open and honest dialogue about how to face adversity, move on from disappointment, problem solve and make the most of the options we are given.
